Calleva Adventure Race 2014—Not your ordinary adventure race!

The sixth edition was an incredible hit and sold out well before the deadline! Don't miss out on the most exciting race in the Washington, DC metro area.

For 2014 we will continue to have two categories: EXPERT for advanced racers and SPORT for strong athletes with limited experience in adventure racing. Racers in both categories will have up to 10 hours to complete the course, but the Expert category will include more technical disciplines that require special skills.

Brand new for this year, we’re excited to announce that the Calleva 2014 Adventure Race will be a USARA Regional Qualifier for the 2014 USARA National Championship being held this year at Deep Creek Lake! 3/4-person coed-teams in our Expert Category can qualify and compete for the top prize, a $400 sponsorship toward the National Championships.

After race greetings from the race director.

    Greetings Calleva Racers
Thank you for taken part in 2011 Calleva Adventure Race.

I hope that scratches, wasp bites, and poison ivy itching are all healed up and you are finding yourselves renewed and restored for your next adventure this season!

Regardless of your standing in the results or whether or not you were able to cross the finish line, you should be incredibly proud of yourselves for tackling such an immense course in such hot and humid conditions (not to mention the thunderstorm!).

Vlad and Oleg have once again outdone themselves on action shots from the race. All photographs for the Calleva race are available for viewing and purchasing at Oleg Litvinenko photography and Vladimir Bukalo photography. There are more links to photos in the right column. Do send along links to your own photos and race reports. Thanks! Read great race report by team Low Speed High Drag. We will start working on the race video... soon. Hopefully it will be ready before the Halloween. We will send it out with the Markoff Haunted Forest update, stay tuned.

Race results may also be viewed via EXPERTSPORT. Congratulations again to the winners and finishers! Teams A-List/Too many kids and Baird Naked in addition to their prizes have a free entry to the 2012 Calleva adventure race for winning the prime division in Expert and Sport categories. Congratulation guys!

    Summary of changes for 2011.

There are some major changes this year. Please read carefully--don’t say we didn’t warn you!

    1) This year race will be a point-to-point format with less than the usual number of optional points. The Expert course distance looks like this: biking – 20-25 miles, paddling – 8-10 miles, running/hiking – 5-12 miles. If you get lost, the extra miles are free of charge. Sport category will have some fun detours and additional biking instead of paddling, but overall distance will be the same. This year sport navigation might be harder than in previous years.

    2) Expert category will have teams of 2 and 4 racers ONLY. COED-4 is the prime division fighting for major prizes. Paddling will be 2 people per canoe with a chance of paddling with your bikes in the canoes (just short section). Canoes and paddles will be provided by Calleva, but racers must provide their own lifejackets. We will update the gear list soon.

    3) Expert category racers will ride mandatory technical single tracks that are at least 5 miles long. No cyclocross bikes are allowed for the Expert category. Sport category racers are allowed to use any bikes, but many optional check points will be accessible only on mountain bikes.

    4) Sport category will have no paddling this year, but racers must be ready for some other water activities. Calleva will provide all necessary gear--get ready for some extreme fun. This year Sport category will also have completely new challenges. Sorry Experts, you have no time for the challenges.

    5) Check-in will be at the same location (Riley’s Lock) and you will leave your cars there. BUT start AND FINISH of the race will be at two remote locations. Racers will be bused to and from there by Calleva. Check the race schedule to see what time you will be brought back to your cars.

    6) To save you some bucks, Calleva is providing its own secure online payment service, eliminating fees to a third party provider. Registration is $75 per racer till May 31, $100 from June 1 to July 31 and $125 after that. The number of spots is limited and the race is always sold out. Online registration will close July 31.

We can’t wait to see you in August! Be ready for a challenge—finish if you dare!

    2011 news.

It's that time of year again! Time to start counting down the days until the annual Calleva Adventure Race. This year's race is scheduled for Sunday, August 7. It might be cold and snowy right now, but you have 8 months to dream about paddling, biking and trekking through the Washington, DC area's own hot and humid August weather.

The first draft of the racing course is ready. We are spending many of our weekends in forest, on trails and in kayaks looking for the best locations for CPs and transition areas. This year everything is going to be new: new Calleva challenge, new single track biking trail, and new paddling area. We will update the gear list and open registration early March. Earlier registration fees are going to be the same $75 per racer. One big change we consider this year is to limit the Expert category to teams of 2 and 4 racers only with coed-4 as prime division... And no river swim this year, get ready to some other surprises.
